It was only after completing this design that I noticed that you also had a RFP out for Public seating as well!  My design incorporates these two elements. Design 1, Rest Air-ria, two seats, features seating for two or parking for two to three bikes. The cyclist may then have a little pit stop upon their arrival to their downtown destination. Bikes can park on all sides of this bike rack.  A manual air pump is attached via tig welded bands to the center of the stand. Design 2, “Park and Sit”, features seating for three or parking for up to six bikes. Bikes can park in between seating, as well as alongside the seats on all four sides. Manual air pumps are optional but encouraged. In order to reduce costs, this design works well with either one or two seats in lieu of the three. Although not depicted in the drawing, the stools may be facing either direction.

Both designs conform to ADA regulation.  They are both fabricated in chromed steel. They require no maintenance, and are quite durable. For installation, the bike racks may be anchor bolted to the existing concrete.  Other installation options can be reviewed and considered in conjunction with TD&H Engineering.

The benches would be a generous 18” deep and could be constructed from steel slats and legs or cast concrete with steel legs consistent with the bench around the library entrance focal point. I originally pictured all the benches yellow, possibly red, but since the book in front of the library will be red, I decided red would work best. My preference would be closer to the Golden Gate Bridge primer red because it relates well with brick, the material of so many downtown buildings. If cast concrete they could be left natural, or I could faux paint stone, wood, water, etc, or paint them with narrative imagery.

This call for artists is for the design, construction and installation of up to twenty (20) benches within the sidewalk at the entrance to the future library building to be located on both sides of a central entrance focal point project (provided through a separate call for artists).

All elements are interconnected, like the rivers, mountains, and settlement of Lewiston. Going deeper, the design brings up metaphysical contrasts of permanence and change, alluvial and fluvial, and the crossover and other interpretations between. The boulder is too jagged, too much its own shape. The steel is too cold, and flowing along its own path. But the wood is the right amount of warmth and smoothness for human comfort. Our hope is that these elements stimulate and allow the viewer to interpret how they choose without being too literal or one-dimensional.

The materials are chosen to create feelings of presence, history, and peace alongside contrast, beauty, and sensory stimulation. The complimentary palette of galvanized steel, wood, and stone offers an array of textures to please the senses. Practically speaking, these materials are also durable enough for a public art project. Granite or Basalt stone is highly durable; steel galvanized after fabrication will be rust-free and withstand solvents for cleaning graffiti; and naturally rot resistant wood such as teak or ipe, creates a highly durable, cleanable, and easily replaceable bench. Lastly, some public art feels as though it is superficial, from somewhere else, and lacking history. The use of ¼’’ steel, thicker 1 ¼’’ wood planks, and a large natural boulder bring heft, scale, and actual history to the bench to help ease this challenge. Lastly, the final streetscape drawings by TD&H show boulders as a protoform, or core form, for their street designs, and this would blend well with our bench design.
